National Infertility Awareness Week: #ThisIsMyStory #InfertilityIs
I was born with an abnormal uterus. I was diagnosed only after having complications while miscarrying twins at the age of 34.
For years, I felt something wasn’t right, but it was difficult to know if I had asked the right questions or spoken up enough about my symptoms. In my case, those conversations need to include words like “uterus,” “miscarriage,” “depression,” “menstruation,” “period.”–sometimes uncomfortable even when talking with a physician.
One goal of NIAW is to normalize conversations about reproductive health.
Seeking open communication and compassionate care, I found the right medical team for me. Eventually, my doctor and I concluded that the attempts to repair my uterus hadn’t been successful enough. Between the inherit malformity and damage sustained through miscarriages, my uterus wasn’t capable of carrying a successful pregnancy.
Tim and I then researched and considered every road to parenthood. We decided to pursue a gestational surrogate. We were overjoyed to find a surrogacy agency who became invested in our family-building journey. They guided us through the process with care.
Fifteen months later, our radiant daughter was born to her dear surrogate. This beautiful and generous woman and her family chose to give Tim and me the greatest gift imaginable. For nine months, they gave our daughter a safe and caring home while she was carried with love by her surrogate. Through it all, we have become extended family.
Each infertility story is different.
The message this week is that we are not alone in our unique journeys, whatever path they might take and however they might resolve. Infertility warriors, you are seen. Fight on.
