Surrogacy match meeting with surrogate and intended parents

Match meeting! It feels like Christmas morning

December 3, 2024/in Intended Parent/Surrogate Stories, Surrogacy, The Surrogacy Journey /by Hope Surrogacy

Match meeting! it feels like Christmas morning.

Malena, Dylan, Elliot, and Myles are meeting in person for the first time.

Even though they’ve met on paper and have been “matched” via a process that includes delving into a lot of personal spaces by professionals who make sure the “I’s are dotted and “T”s are crossed, there is still a feeling of uncertainty … but it a good way.

It feels like Christmas morning because the air has a charge: anticipation, excitement, and good energy.

They are meeting because Malena has been approved to be a gestational carrier – a surrogate – for Elliot and Myles. They are excited to be working on their sibling journey.

The Importance of Family!

Dylan is Malena’s husband and the father of their two daughters, who are 5 and 2 years old. He is as much a part of this meeting as anyone, considering he will be by Malena’s side during her surrogacy journey.

Elliot and Myles are already the parents of one rambunctious and adorable toddler, Ford, who was born in 2022 via a different surrogate. This experience immediately had them wanting another child … and maybe another if life and fate allow all the stars to keep aligning.

What does a Match meeting look like?

But first, this match meeting must occur so they can talk through the process, ensure they are all on the same page regarding the plan, and find out if they have a connection. A connection is crucial as they traverse a course that will hopefully be smooth as Malena prepares her body for the transfer and pregnancy. The transfer timeline will depend on medical clearance, legal, and preparation for the transfer. Once she is pregnant, nature will take over, and everyone anxiously awaits the baby’s nine-month finish line.

With a checklist of topics to cover, Mary and Amy, Hope Surrogacy’s main facilitators, begin the conversation after general introductions and big hugs. Everyone settles in for a couple of hours around the table (well, except for Ford, who is much more interested in the basket of toys … and every little item on the shelves in the room!) to discuss the finer details of what a surrogacy journey will encompass for each of the couples.

Because Elliot and Myles have been through the process once already, the flow of the meeting is smooth albeitenlightening as Malena shares her “why” of becoming a surrogate. Elliot and Myles then shared their perspective as second-time IPs.

Malena’s Why.

Malena’s mother-in-law, a nurse, introduced her to another surrogate who worked with Hope Surrogacy . She made her aware of surrogacy and the possibility that she might consider becoming a surrogate herself.

It is her love of her children that has prompted her to follow her heart to surrogacy.  She wants to help other people experience being a parent.

Because her two pregnancies were “classic textbook,” the groundwork has been laid for a potential third “easy” pregnancy.

We’re a Team attitude!

Elliot and Myles are ready to support her as much as she wants with their “we’re a team” attitude.  They are grateful that someone would be willing to dedicate a significant amount of time – physically and mentally – to adding a child to their family.

Time for Lunch!

Out of the gate, the conversation is smooth and continues this way while the list of topics is covered, from an Overview of the Process to What to Expect During the Pregnancy to The Plan and a Wrap-Up. Of course, questions pop up, and personal stories weave through these two hours as everyone becomes more acquainted and comfortable, leading to an offer to share lunch outside of the Hope Surrogacy office so the four can extend their connection beyond the technical aspects of this relationship.

At any point during this meeting, if there is a sense that everyone is not on the same page, a mutual parting of the ways is an option. It’s obvious, though, that this meeting and subsequent lunch were hugely successful, and the next steps toward creating a pregnancy will be coming soon.

What a gift for everyone … even if it’s not Christmas.
