Going Outside the Box to Have a Baby
Doing things outside the box.
Brooke and Alex have always done things “outside the box.” They married young after only dating for seven and a half months, “growing up together,” and then starting their own businesses. They took a medical diagnosis that curtailed Brooke’s ability to bring a pregnancy to term in stride because they are the yin and yang for each other—Brooke is the emotional but organized one, and Alex is the logical, analytical problem solver.
So, outside the box is right in line with how they will become parents through surrogacy.
If there is something that both feel with certainty, it’s that they are ready for the addition of a child in their lives … not to make Tater, their most adorable mini Goldendoodle, feel slighted because this was how their caretaking sides came out and blossomed.
Brooke is honest when she says even she was a bit surprised by how nurturing Alex is with Tater because initially he was indulging Brooke’s desire for a dog, but within three to four months, he was also a smitten kitten … for their puppy … and now is equally, if not more so, the one to cater to Tater (see what I did there with the little rhyme?!).
But there’s this “feeling” that something is missing, even though they are living their best lives: both professionally thriving while spending time traveling down to Sanibel Island, zipping into the city of Chicago to enjoy the culture there, or staying home and gobbling up Alex’s delicious cuisine as he has indulged his whim to cook and now delights those lucky enough to be invited to their home with his creations!
They are fortunate to live in the community where Brooke grew up, just four doors away from her parents, which lends itself well to impromptu gatherings, pool parties, and, of course, grandparents at the waiting! Living in the suburbs wasn’t something they necessarily strived for, but when a great house became available, Brooke said she thought of “future Brooke” and knew this was the absolute best place to live and raise a family.
The third time will be the charm.
After two unsuccessful surrogacy attempts, Brooke feels confident that the third time will be a charm. They look forward to an open and honest relationship with their surrogate so that she feels supported from day one.
Oh! And wouldn’t it be great for Tater to have a real Tot in his life, too?
