Amy: A Mom, Two Surrogates and One Amazing Journey
Today on a brand new episode of Hope Works, we’re thrilled to introduce you to Amy, a mom who’s dream of parenthood became a reality thanks to the help of two amazing surrogates. In this episode, you’ll hear how Amy’s journey began with her childhood dreams of motherhood. As a teenager, Amy received a diagnosis that changed her world, but it never changed her dreams. When she finally arrived at the surrogacy journey, she was more than ready. Hear Amy tell her surrogacy story. Just press play below!
Advice for Moms Like You
Amy and her husband Evan started their journey soon after getting married. They knew surrogacy was the road they wanted to take to build their family, but it wasn’t always easy. Now they have kids and have finished the surrogacy journey twice with two different surrogates. We loved the advice she gave for other parents when Brent, our podcast host, asked what advice she had for moms and dads just starting out on the surrogacy journey:
“I would say that one thing that helped us is to be as open as you can and just really lean in and trust your carrier and the choices that they’re going to make. The women that sign up and choose to be carriers have not come to this decision lightly. It’s something that they’ve felt called to do… and we’re so lucky that they’ve trusted their intuition because I would not be a mother if they hadn’t… If you are open and establish a certain level of trust I think it can be really enjoyable, and I think you’re going to surprise yourself with the relationship and the amount of love that’s involved. I think it’s life-changing.”
Special Moments To Look Forward To
There were a couple of questions that didn’t make it to the podcast, so we thought we’d share them here! Brent asked Amy about the experience of being a mom on the surrogacy journey and about the special moments’ parents get to look forward to.
Brent: We got to look back at your surrogacy journey together with all the beautiful moments and challenges, too. For parents starting out on the journey, are there any moments they should look forward to that you didn’t expect when you started your journey?
Amy: [During the journey,] you realize that your surrogate is dreaming about and anticipating the moment your child is born as much as you are. It means so much to them, too. Especially the physical act of handing your baby over. There is such pride and honor in that moment and beyond. Both of our carriers told me over and over for months, “I just can’t wait to see your face.”
Some Moms are Scared to Work With A Surrogate
Brent: For some moms out there, the idea of working with another woman to bring your baby into the world can feel quite scary. There is so much unknown. You worked with two surrogates, and you had an incredible journey with both of them. Do you remember feeling scared at the beginning? Do you have any advice for moms on processing that fear?
Amy: Of course, I felt scared. I think it’s only natural. In fact, I think it’s necessary to feel scared because it means you realize the enormity of the situation. Bringing life into the world, whether through surrogacy or not, is a big deal. These emotions are not always the most pleasant to sit with or work through, but if you can ride them out and allow yourself to be vulnerable and open, you create the opportunity for a beautiful connection with another human. Not to mention welcoming a child—your child!—into this world!
Thank you, Amy!
